Yeah it was a huge "whuuuu?" at the time. I guess the missing-link knowledge is that most DW comm admins also miss the hell out of LJ comm culture. If a horde of Tumblr exiles rolled up and started tossing memes and shitposts around in a comm not specifically reserved for Official Business, most mods would be like "hallelujah! fucking finally! someone using this place for what it's meant for!" And if I'd realized earlier how different DW actually is from LJ in practice, that probably would've been the explanation I'd've used.
