So how are you young whippersnappers infuriating the RIAA these days?

A year. A freaking year of the big computer being broken and having nothing but a netbook that can't install software and can't play music. Now it's finally fixed I have a bunch of last.fm artist recommendations that I want to follow up on, and... I don't know where to go. So, friends-list poll: if you download music, how do you do it?

Before my computer had an accident with a cup of tea, I got my musical theater and classical and opera mostly from LJ communities, and used DC++ for my goth fix. Tried torrents a couple of times but couldn't get them to work. I assume the LJ comms are still around; I've applied for membership at a couple of goth mp3-sharing comms, but none of them look very active, so I need suggestions. Easy ways to get torrents to work? P2P clients that aren't disgustingly spyware-ridden? Or, if any of you happen to partially share my taste in music, blogs or LJ comms where I can download all the House of Usher and Black Tape for a Blue Girl my little heart desires?

Bonus guess-the-lyrics music meme, based not on random playlist shuffling but on songs that have been stuck in my head recently.

1. It's a rip in the bustle and a rustle in the hay / and I'll pitch the quick fantastic / with flings of confetti and my petticoats a-way up high - The Miller's Son from A Little Night Music, [livejournal.com profile] mmebahorel

2. Because we may be the haunted men / but we will hold our heads up when / we're walking down the street of dreams

3. Will you bury me deep? / I must never be found / when at last I find sleep / and I'm cold in the ground

4. Aux clartés des étoiles / je crois encore la voir / entr'ouvrir ses longs voiles / aux vents tièdes du soir

5. Moments lost though time remains / I am so proud of what we were / no pain remains, no feeling / Eternity awaits Beloved - VNV Nation, [livejournal.com profile] mmejavert

6. In ancient times, if you were sick / they make you bleed / oh honey I know it hurts

7. Cupid from his favour'd nation / Care and envy shall remove / Jealousy that poisons passion / And despair that dies for love

8. I see no signals, I see no signs / this is our life that's undermined / It's just six before dawn / and the waves come crashing down, come crashing down

9. The history of the world, my pet / is learn forgiveness and try to forget - Sweeney Todd finale, [livejournal.com profile] viorica8957

10. We found you hiding, we found you lying / choking on the dirt and sand / Your former glories and all the stories / dragged and washed with eager hands

I find [livejournal.com profile] album_share, [livejournal.com profile] ysi_leftovers, and [livejournal.com profile] justsoundtracks to be useful. And I always forget that I'm in [livejournal.com profile] ljmixtape, but it appears to be active. No idea how good these are for your specific interests, but they're fun to browse through sometimes.

9 is from "Sweeney Todd"- the song right before he tosses Mrs. Lovett into the oven- and I'm guessing that 4 is from the French version of Les Mis- "Castle on a Cloud?"

[identity profile] 10littlebullets.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes to #9, no to #4.

I use [livejournal.com profile] bwayrecordings for my musical tastes and [livejournal.com profile] mp3_share has so much stuff there that you should be able to find some stuff you like. Good luck!

Thanks! Yeah, I'm in [livejournal.com profile] ysi_leftovers even though I don't have it added, and I just scrolled through and downloaded some random Finnish folk music, haha.

If it's mainstream and/or reasonably popular I check [livejournal.com profile] album_love first.

If it's musical theatre or a fair facsimile thereof, I go to either [livejournal.com profile] bwayrecordings or [livejournal.com profile] castrecordings and check the tags, and if no luck I go to the Singing Stage and check their archives. Can't help you get into TSS, though, unless you want to donate actual money to get in. And I'm not entirely sure I remember how to access it now anyway...

If the above methods fail, I use Soulseek (slsknet.org) and then if I'm still out of luck I check torrents.

This combination usually nets me SOMETHING though I've been rather frustrated as regards to Italian pop/rock music these days. XD

[identity profile] mmejavert.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
And Soulseek DOES have Black Tape for a Blue Girl, at least. I know this for a fact. :D

Aha, number 4 was driving me crazy, so I cheated and looked it up. :) I could hear the 'je crois encore la voir' so clearly in my head, but could not figure out where the eff it was coming from. I thought it was the duet from Lakme though.

Yeah, I mostly use lj comms as well. Also, if I found something on youtube, I use vixy dot com or mediaconverter dot org to grab it.

1) The Miller's Son (A Little Night Music)

[identity profile] digne.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
That was the only one, other than Sweeney, that I knew.

[identity profile] reconditarmonia.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
They looked familiar, so I googled (shame!) - I ought to have caught 3, 4 (I was very, very close though) and 7 looks really familiar but gets no hits.

[identity profile] 10littlebullets.livejournal.com 2009-08-04 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Thaaaat would be because I misquoted it, it should be "Care and envy." And once you google that you will probably know how I can have it stuck in my head for weeks without knowing all the words--talk about earworm.

[identity profile] 10littlebullets.livejournal.com 2009-08-04 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Looked through the [livejournal.com profile] mp3_share tags and didn't see anything I was looking for, but thanks anyway!

[identity profile] 10littlebullets.livejournal.com 2009-08-04 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yep! *edits, and also edits the misquoted lyric in #7*

[identity profile] 10littlebullets.livejournal.com 2009-08-04 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Heeee. #4 is so goddamn beautiful that I can't help having it stuck in my head. And trying to copy down the sheet music from the Alain Vanzo rendition on YouTube. And listening to that version over and over and over because yes, yes that is how you do it.

Ha, I knew it must be Purcell!

Everyone should know about this. It is the best.

Limewire and the Pirate Bay have always worked pretty well for me, provided everything is thoroughly scanned first. I've never had any problems. But that only works if it's fairly mainstream.

[identity profile] 10littlebullets.livejournal.com 2009-08-04 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh nice. *downloading some Red Lorry Yellow Lorry as we speak*

[identity profile] 10littlebullets.livejournal.com 2009-08-04 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmmm. Re: Pirate Bay, I've never had much trouble finding torrents, I could just never get the client software to work. But I'll give it another try once the fixed computer stops being a little bitch and lets me connect to the internet--Pirate Bay doesn't turn up much goth music, but it does find me a lot of opera.

[identity profile] mmejavert.livejournal.com 2009-08-05 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
5 is Beloved by VNV Nation, right? :D

[identity profile] mmejavert.livejournal.com 2009-08-05 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Psssst. Use Opera and there's a built-in torrent transfer engine that's way easier to use and way less bulky than any outside BT client. (Even Azureus.)

[identity profile] 10littlebullets.livejournal.com 2009-08-05 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. :D
