By the way (this is unrelated) - I know it's not your era, but have you read Les égarements du coeur et de l'esprit? I read it for a class last year, and though it's not too interesting in and of itself, it has one rather wonderful character (Versac) - wonderful because he's just so obnoxious and so honest about it. :D
