A music rec request

Dunno how many goffs are lurking on my friendslist or reading my journal, but if any of you happen to find this I have a little request for you. It's pretty simple.

Basically, I want recommendations for songs and/or albums by old school goth bands. Albums you feel are landmark, songs that you like or think are particularly representative of their bands. I don't want Manson, I don't want Voltaire or Switchblade Symphony or Inkubus Sukkubus. I'm talking Bauhaus, Christian Death, Fields of the Nephilim, Joy Division, Sisters of Mercy, Love and Rockets. My general problem is that I've heard of them all but have no idea where to start; I could employ the highly scientific method of searching for 'Christian Death' on eMule and seeing which songs pop up the most frequently, but frankly I'd rather have human input.

Recs for old-school/experimental industrial in the same vein are also appreciated. Not artists, but songs and albums.

They are a wee more punk, in my humble opinion, but what about The Damned? They are fun fun fun, and come on a harpsicord!?

Songs? Albums? Pwese? *puppy eyes* That harpsichord sounds interesting.

Well they are most famous for the song "Smash it up," (Offspring covered it for some soundtrack) A more gothy song would be like "Grimly Fiendish," a song that makes me want to run around the house in a cape. Hee. Try Phantasmagoria, or Machine Gun Etiquette. But that's just me. Spikey black hair and tight leather pants, how can you go wrong?

Ooh that takes me back to my uni days - Sisters of Mercy Floodland would be my first choice, things like This Corrosion; so long since I've heard any Neph but its all good, I think.. you'd like The Mission too, Carved in Sand has Butterfly on A Wheel, I love that. Oh and The Cure of course, early stuff used to sound discordant to me but its improved over the years, I liked Disintregation best but a "best of" compilation should be fine. At the same time I was listening to Guns n Roses Use Your Illusion 1 & 2 and Manic Street Preachers, as well as All About Eve (Scarlet and other stories) not sure if that's quite what you had in mind though.

Damn, wonder which box all my old tapes of this stuff are packed away in? Not wanted them in years but now I'm curious if I'd still like them as much.

Ohhh, thanks.

And yes, the Cure = kickass.
