Jan. 7th, 2004 20:09Well, birthday is on Sunday--in lieu of a party, which would just be awkward, we're going out to this really good steakhouse and then finally watching Return of the King. w00t.
Okay, then there's the decision of what else to do over the weekend. Much to my parents' dismay, as it happens to be a rather bad neighbourhood, there are two good hangouts near the U Street subway station: an all-ages nightclub with live bands every night, 2 blocks from the 11th street entrance to the station, and SMYAL, the queer youth drop-in clinic/community center, 3 blocks from the 13th street entrance. On Friday SMYAL's drop-in clinic goes an hour late (and is closed over the weekend), and on Sunday Sevendust and Ill Nino are playing at the club. So... both? Neither? One and not the other? There are several factors to consider... I don't particularly like the bands, but mosh pits are always a fun excuse for masochism... but my main concern is that I don't feel particularly safe wandering around 10th and U at night, especially since DC is notorious for wackos who gun down transgenders execution-style, and most people take me as a boy at first sight. I so fucking do not want to be the next Brandon Teena. On the other hand, I've been there before a few times, and my capacity for paranoia is much higher than the actual probabity of me getting shot.
There's also the fact that my parents are unaware that the subway station in question is on the Green Line, which I have been forbidden to ride on pain of death because it goes through Anacostia and other such lovely neighbourhoods. Hmm.
Ahhh screw it, paranoia be damned, I'm going to SMYAL on Friday. Not sure about the concert though--don't like the bands, and there's always the possibility that the 400-Pound Moshers from Hell will put in a return appearance. Hm.
Oi, fretting is really my specialty, isn't it?
