Requisite OSBP post.
Apr. 26th, 2008 22:55Since I got all my feminist ranting off my chest in a very cathartic comment thread in
callirhoe's journal, I will keep my remarks on the Open Source Boobs Project flippant. (No, you don't want to read the feminist ranting; a quick click on the link will show that there's no deficit of that, and other people have said it better than I have.)
1. Obviously the Open Source Boobs Project has a very firm base in object-oriented programming.
2. Despite that, I think it's something of a misnomer; "Public Domain Boobs Project" just doesn't sound as progressive, since the idea that women's bodies are public domain has been around for a while and isn't really conducive to winning Feminist Points.
3. Actually, boobs that were really open source would be pretty cool. The human body looks pretty closed-source to me--although the big man in the sky doesn't seem to have a problem with us decompiling it to try to figure out how it works--but think what would happen if you could tinker with your boobs at will! The hardware geeks could install laser guns in the nipples, and the software geeks could write security features to automatically fry the living shit out of any non-authenticated user who touched them! (With manual overrides available both to allow anonymice to touch at the administrator's discretion, and to fry trusted users who abuse the privilege.) I would be fully in support of a truly Open Source Boobs Project.
