Wheeeee legal drinking age!
Jan. 12th, 2009 12:15Had a lovely relatively quiet birthday with my mom and my brother--we went out to a Lebanese restaurant for lunch and I had a glass of zinfandel. The waiter got adorably excited when he found out it was my 21st birthday, and I got free Turkish coffee (which more than cancelled out any effects of the wine--ziiiiing!) and a blessing and a kiss on the forehead from the owner. It was sweet.
Then the afternoon was a bit of a confused rush, because my brother's winter break ends tomorrow and he had to leave for North Carolina with a friend, but he wanted to do birthday presents first. You know you're a dork when you get more books than booze for your 21st birthday--in my case, three bottles of wine, a Calvin and Hobbes collection, a book about music and the brain, Georges by Dumas père, Agnes Grey by Anne Brontë, and Julie Rose's translation of Les Misérables. Mom hinted that there might be more coming, but I guess it's still on its way from Amazon or wherever.
And then for dinner we went to this place in Bethesda that serves French bistro food and it was insanely good, and it was really funny to get carded and see the look on the waitress's face as she examined my ID and realized it was my birthday. After dinner they tried to give us free dessert which I was allergic to, so instead they gave us free port. Whereupon I discovered that port is very good and stronger than it tastes and I will have to acquire some. And it's also comforting to have something on the dessert menus of upscale restaurants that I'm not allergic to.
And now, a question for the DC- and Baltimore-area friends list: the birthday party is on Saturday and I want to do something geeky during the afternoon before we all descend on a bar that serves absinthe. I was thinking the tour of the USS Constellation, the sailing ship in the inner harbor in Baltimore, but this weekend will probably be a liiittle too cold for that. So any suggestions? Nerdy and off-the-beaten-track is better, although I'm open to almost anything.
Also comment if you want to come--right now the plan is "my house, sometime Saturday afternoon." Let me know if you have any conflicts, and if you want to do something nerdy or just go out later and drink. XD Anyone in the area who's on my f-list is invited, including under-21 folk.
