Augh.
I am completely unable to write anything in my usual style that exceeds a couple thousand words. Drabbles, shortfic, one-shots, drabbles, shortfic, one-shots. It gets frustrating.
After the prodigious ramble my Enjolras figment put forth, I'm attempting, on a lark, to write a fic in the style of Victor Hugo. A long one, or at least one well in excess of ten thousand words. It's a fun exercise, even if I'm not that good at it. Third-person omniscient (as opposed to third-person limited, which is reponsible for my usual tripe) does wonders for my ability to tell a story, I relish the challenge, and Grantaire-figment has already responded to Enjolras-figment with a ramble of his own. But it requires discipline and a certain amount of inspiration. And a hell of a lot of hacking out unsatisfactory passages and rewriting them.
And after his ramble, R muse shut up and I need him for the dialogue I just tried to write. Enjolras comes off perfectly, but R talks like my!R instead of Hugo!R and I can't get him back on track and it's pissing me off.
It's still a good exercise though. It forces me to think about everything I put down, and it makes my narration a good deal clearer. I'm just grousing because my authorial laziness isn't accustomed to such work. I shan't make a habit of imitation, but as an exercise, yes, it's good for me.

It will come to you soon enough. I'm having a similar struggle with the final part of my crack!smut fic for the community. Hopefully the both of us can get our things together, and finish our respective stories.
