A random bit of family lore.

My mother was brought up Catholic at a time when Mass was still conducted in Latin. She picked up a few bastardized words here and there, but not enough for any real understanding. Come Christmastide, she was always mystified by the refrain of "Adeste Fideles," as she thought that "venite adoremus" meant "here comes a dormouse."

That's beautiful.

Can I metaquote? Because srsly, I just died laughing.

....sure! Man, I haven't been metaquoted in aaaages. *bounces*

Just did it! :D

When they sing that tune, I'm inevitably the only one singing it in Latin.

Adeste, fideles!
Laeti triumphantes...

*dork* :D

It's okay, I'm probably the only person on earth who knows Personent Hodie. We can be dorks together.

!

That was in our spring concert reportoire, in high school choir, my freshman year. Alas, I remember not the words, only the tune.

[identity profile] 10littlebullets.livejournal.com 2006-08-03 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
I remember about half the words, but I'm sure if I looked it up it'd all come rushing back.

...why spring concert?! It's a carol.

Er. I meant winter. XD I was mixing it up with another song we did that also had a 'Hodie' in it. Personent was winter my sophomore year. It was joy.

Nope, count me in. I know both. Also Ave Maria, Ubi Caritas, and various other things.

Being Catholic and in choir for eleven years will do that to you.

In my years of CCD, all we learned were a few awful Catholic hymns. Anyone for a round of "This is the Day That the Lord Has Made"?

XDD That is absolutely hilarious.

A few drunk Christmases ago, my aunts and uncles were singing that song, and when they got to the chorus, my ditsy cousin asked why they were singing about coffee and mice.

Your mother is not alone.

That is great.... I can't stop laughing! XD
