There are worse fates than corsets.

It's always rather disappointing when you're browsing around the bookstore and come across a bit of historical fiction with a beautiful cover and an attractive summary... only to start skimming it and realize it's half poorly written costume drama and half thinly disguised gloating about how much more Liberated we are nowadays.

Transparent and anachronistic pseudo-feminism in historical fiction makes the baby Susan B. Anthony cry.  Especially when it tops the NYT bestseller list.

"Historical fiction" and "costume drama" have become more or less interchangeable in the last few years, along with "thinly-veiled romantic crotchrot". Which title, specifically, were you referring to?

A Great and Terrible Beauty. Unfortunately, it was in Target and their book selection is tiny, so I couldn't run screaming to look for the Mary Renault.

There can be no greater truth than this.

I know the feeling. :( The bookstores here don't seem to have anything else.

And this is why I refuse to read anything on the NYT "best sellers" list. Stick with the classics, they're safer and less vomit inducing.
