God is behind everything, but everything hides God.  Things are black, creatures are opaque.  To love a being is to render that being transparent.

And then he wastes all that talent (and his publisher's patience) by going on for ten pages about how the sewer is the cloaca of Paris.

(ok, so actually, I like the sewer bit just fine. It's the "convent is a prison" bit that drives me batty because he just says the same thing over and over and over for ten pages. We got it the first time, Victor. It didn't need a whole book. One chapter would have sufficed.)
