Edit: My über-long audiobook of Les Mis and my copy of Strangers finally arrived. Sweet baby Jesus on a pogo stick, B&N, I ordered them the day after Christmas!

My inner Tolkien-purist is going to give me endless deathglares for saying this, but here goes: you can skip the Ainulindale and the Valaquenta without missing much. And "Of the Beginning of Days" is booooring. But if you can suffer through until you get to Fëanor and his brood, I promise you it gets fun. :-)
