#34 and #35--yay, a chance to use the Captain Vest icon.

Oh lord. So, New York Saturday. I knew it was going to be an interesting day when I got to the Greyhound station and the 8:00 bus never showed up. The bus I eventually wound up on left an hour and a half late, and the driver took a half-hour rest stop as soon as we got on the NJ turnpike, so I arrived right at the end of Master of the House. I'd totally call up and give Greyhound a piece of my mind, but I know for a fact that they refuse to give refunds or do anything about it and I don't want to make some CSR's life more difficult than it already is.

Arriving halfway through the performance was interesting; you don't have that show hypnosis you get from sitting in the theater waiting for half an hour and then gradually watching the show unfold, so I was seeing the first fifteen or twenty minutes with fresh eyes. I love Drew in the Waltz of Treachery. He positively towers over Chip and Ann, and his whole attitude just reeks of "I don't want to deal with this shit." Drew is great in all the scenes that Alex kind of forgot to act in--the Waltz of Treachery, the Letter, Valjean's confession, etc. He's still weirdly stern with Cosette, and way too angry when he lets Javert go. I'm firmly of the belief that by the time the Ten Years Later sign goes up, Valjean should have matured a bit and calmed down, and be less quick to anger. But Drew's interpretation of Valjean seems much better thought out than Alex's on the whole.

Both matinee and evening were full cast, by the way. Practically unprecedented. XD It's seriously weird when there's nobody out, even in the ensemble, two shows in a row.

I was warned over the phone that Max "had a new vest," but as [livejournal.com profile] mmebahorel had heard this from Don or Minarik or someone before the show and not actually seen it, I was not warned about how horrifying the vest was. It had apparently been foisted upon him by Cammack to replace his black waistcoat in Look Down and the café scene, and it was bright, shiny red satin with a gold pattern on it. With a red cravat. The truly horrifying thing, though, was not that it was shiny or garish or completely OOC (which it was), it was that from the mezzanine, the red and gold blended together and it looked orange. An orange that clashed with the red tie. Poor Max, he's been subject to so many awful costuming decisions. I mean, he was having a very good performance that afternoon, but the vest was really distracting until he changed into the regular one for One Day More.

This time I actually bothered to watch Rob in the first attack, and yes, he does direct the sniper. That is made of awesome. We asked him about it at the stage door, and he said yeah, it upped the stakes to have Valjean foiling another one of Javert's plans. ♥ He had a slight vocal... something... near the end of Stars, not a crack but something weird on "till theeeeeen." I don't think [livejournal.com profile] mmebahorel and [livejournal.com profile] lady_iphigeneia noticed until he mentioned it himself. In any case his total awesome more than made up for it. It's strange, I never really liked him on the tour, but now his Javert seems more mature, and his voice is huge.

Also, Michael Minarik, in case it needed any more repetition, is wonderful as Grantaire. I just... awww. In the matinee he had this drunk stumble going on and in the evening he and Max during Drink With Me provoked whispers of "They're so doing it," and "Yeah, they are" from me and [livejournal.com profile] lady_iphigeneia. They looked like they were trying to conceal the fact that they fight like a married couple.

Would write up what happened at the stage door but I'm bloody tired and this post is three days overdue, I just remember barricade boys teasing Max about his vest and the discovery of new graffiti outside the Broadhurst. Somebody added "Aux armes, citoyens!" and "I hereby claim this wall for the Republic!" Bahahahaha.

V V amused. They're so doing it? I know people see the chemistry there and honestly I was looking foc waiting to be ... impressed but it's all so ... miserable! Why yes, pun intended. and I can't deal with that angsty yes but come on! Has no one thought of re-writing history? Um, ok. Didn't mean to go there.
