I must sound incredibly pretentious to someone who doesn't realize it's all for fun.

After hours of busywork for calculus this week, enough to make me consider adding "more tedious than approximating integrals by hand" to my mental list of stock phrases, there is nothing sweeter in the world than getting 100% on a test the rest of the class bombed... and getting credit for a smart-aleck answer to #4 because "it's technically correct, but that's not what I meant."

I'll just have to let that console me when I'm up to my ass this weekend in French essays, Old Norse translation, more calc busywork, and writing an XHTML validator in Java. Sigh.

Many family phone calls exchanged about the cat. I miss my fluffy orange bundle of terror.

Also, I am holding out hope that the current spat with the Idiot Fangirl Contingent in Les Mis fandom will yield some sort of intelligent-discussion renaissance. Like, "I need to scrub the stupid out of my brain, let's all talk about symbolism for a while." Come one, come all to the Novel forum of Abaissé so we can talk about how Enjolras and St. John Rivers were obviously separated at birth.

Out of curiosity: have they ever discussed the similarities between Hugo's description of the battle of Waterloo and the defence of the barricade? That's my current interest...

I don't think so, but I could be wrong. I know that the similarities struck me last time I reread the book, but I don't remember whether I ever discussed it with anyone.

Hm, what made me think (you sometimes focus on strange things during re-reading) was Hugo's wonderings who exactly won the batle of Watterloo. As he says, it surely wasn't Wellington who wouldn't succeed without the Prussians - and suggests (quite clearly to me) that the real winner was Cambronne with his famous "Merde!" as an answer to those asking him to surrender in a totally hopeless situation. The similarity with the downfall of the Barricade is interesting. The similarity (and differences :) between Thenardier saving Georges Pontmercy and Valjean saving Marius (and meeting Thenardier at the end...interesting) are another thing.

...oh man there's actually a current and active Les Mis forum in existence. Thank you for the link!

You're welcome! Come join the fun.

... I misread that as Joan Rivers. HA HA HA HA HA. Now I can't stop laughing.

I didn't know who Joan Rivers is and had to look her up on Wikipedia. My lack of cultural literacy, let me show you it.

I didn't even know there was a spat. O_O; But I hope it can be resolved without the guillotine.

[identity profile] 10littlebullets.livejournal.com 2008-10-03 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Manic Javert fangirls who treat him like some kind of woobie bishie? I'd say in this case I approve of the guillotine. Or the banhammer. Which might descend soon, considering that when Sylvie gently called them on their shit one of them called her a whore in Hungarian.

Oh dear. That's just really weird and uncalled for. D:

The weirdest thing about that thread is finding out there is fic where Javert comes back to life/didn't commit suicide after all. Huh?

I miss my fluffy orange bundle of terror.

I'm sorry about your cat. I had one myself that passed 4 years ago.

There used to be a whole subgenre of fic where Javert got fished out of the river and rescued by a Mary-Sue, but it died out so long ago that it's completely irrelevant to bring it up.

Also, when I made a snippy comment about the constant use of "Javvie" and other barf-worthy nicknames, the poster in question essentially told me to either shut my face or stop calling Enjolras "Enjy." Which I... don't do. So I think her perception of reality is pretty skewed.

I can't deal with it man. Well, it's not done anymore, at least.

Which I... don't do. So I think her perception of reality is pretty skewed.

Yeah, I don't think she gave too much of a glance at the screenname. Or was just throwing insults to see what stuck.

Enjolras and St. John Rivers... as in, the rigid man of the church who wants to marry his own cousin to serve his duty to the church and those poor children in Africa in Jane Eyre? I believe that's his name if my memory serves me right.

[identity profile] 10littlebullets.livejournal.com 2008-10-04 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, that's the one. (Although I think it was India.)
