Choral follies and miscellanea.

Awwww, somebody posted a Marie-Suzette to the Les Mis section of ff.net. I should be dismayed at this final sign that my fandom is going down the tubes, but--I find it kind of cute, actually.

Tonight, in my early-music ensemble, I sang Soprano I for the first time in my life! Although, given that it was on a rather intricate early-Renaissance piece, I can't really claim to have sung melody, just the part that happened to have all the high F's. It was a lot of fun.

General chorus is a pain in the ass though. On the one hand we've got 'Die Meere' by Brahms which is gorgeous, and a kickass arrangement of 'How Can I Keep from Singing,' but on the other hand we've got some stupid shit that tries to be edgy by changing key and time signatures every other measure and just ends up sounding crappy and unmusical. Also, it being general chorus, half the people there could not stay in tune if they had a pitch pipe glued to their ears and can't be arsed to pronounce German correctly. However, we're going to have concert t-shirts that say "Hold me, I'm a fermata," which just makes me happy.

Nose has been running all day, and there is a Nerd Death Plague making the rounds of campus. If I get sick over fall break I will chokeabitch.

Aw. I find it kind of cute that you find that cute. XD

Oh, I really wonder who likes that sort of choral music. Someone must, clearly. It seems like everything we do in the chapel choir is like that, which I wasn't quite prepared for. But I think I secretly want that t-shirt.

What, the "inability to pick a damn time signature = advanced and edgy" bullshit? Whoever thought up that idiocy should go die in a fire. And bring Stephen Hatfield along.

Fortunately we only have one piece like that. The rest is decent-to-excellent repertoire, it's just getting mangled by an incompetent chorus.

...perhaps I'm being too harsh. It's just that the early-music group is so awesome, and everyone in it is so competent, that anything less is making me flinch.

Do you know the name of it? I'm kind of into renaissance music lately. And very cool on singing soprano. I've kind of got a deep voice myself so I can only sit back and listen to sopranos in amazement.

I'm just glad there is a fandom. Seriously, after years of only knowing about broadwayworld.com boards, anything else is like a breath of fresh air. Now I'm gonna go check the story out . . .

It's called "Mariam Matrem Virginem," and it's one of a few songs from the Llibre Vermell we're working on. It's gorgeous, and I'm lucky I got put on Soprano I because the other two parts have, like, page-long phrases where they have to stagger breathing between just three people. The director said she had to sing it one-on-a-part once and started getting muscle cramps from oxygen deprivation... but it's so pretty.

Thank you! (Eep. The muscle cramps don't sound too fun though.)

I've been listening to the Llibre on i-tunes, and I like the "Mariam Matrem" a lot, but I think my favorite is the "Laudemus Virginem". Is your choir doing that one too?

I don't think so, although we're still getting new rep. *g* The only other one from the Llibre I'm positive we're doing is "Stella Splendens." The theme this semester is the various medieval cultures of Spain, so we're also doing a few of the Cantigas de Santa Maria (in Galician!), some very odd folk songs, an Italian-style madrigal written by a Spanish dude, "O Regem Coeli" by Victoria, something in Sephardic(!), and god only knows what else.

ooh. :bookmarks:

A group I've listened to a little called "The New World Renaissance Band" has a couple of good songs from Renaissance Spain, if you're inclined to check it out. I don't know if they have the best versions of the songs but they've introduced to me a few good songs.

I think fandoms are more cyclical than anything. And at least there is a fandom at all. >_>;;

And I hope you feel better.
