Okay, no longer feeling misanthropic and Stendhalian. *g* It's funny the little things that can cheer you up. My two pairs of Expensive Shoes, the combat boots and the super-comfortable Easy Spirit flats that go with everything, were both getting disgracefully scuffed--I couldn't even wear the flats with anything nicer than my ratty black jeans, because the contrast would've been too painful. So today I sat down with a damp washcloth and a tube of shoe polish and gave both pairs a good spit-shine. Now the flats are black again and the boots are shiny and I'm happy.

shoes can NEVER be too expensive! Still, I am glad that two pairs of Expensive Shoes can always save the day.
