Letting my flist know I'm not dead

I am not dead, flist!

I am in Munich, actually. Left Salzburg and the cognitive dissonance caused by omnipresent Rococo (omg it's so pretty vs. THIS IS WHY PEOPLE HAVE REVOLUTIONS) for Neuschwanstein and different sorts of cognitive dissonance. Neo-Gothic pseudo-medieval castle built by an eccentric, reclusive king in the majesty of nature vs. crass tourist commercialism: fight!

Also, I almost had an allergy meltdown on the way back. My immune system can deal with pollen, it can deal with horse dander, and it can deal with chocolate that might have traces of milk/nuts in it, but I should NOT have tested it out on all three at once. And yet I found nothing better to do than take a lovely horse-drawn carriage ride down the mountain in the middle of springtime while eating marzipan-filled chocolate.

And I got hazed by a bunch of Bavarian tweens who called me a witch 'cause I dressed funny and had bright red hair. This is the sort of thing that's absolutely crushing when you're the same age as your assailants, and absolutely hilarious when you're ten years older than them. I mean, WTF? Did they zero in on the language difference and figure I was easy prey? Once the social equality is removed by the age disparity, it's kind of like being savaged by a kitten. Only not as cute.

Anyway, it was actually a rather nice trip and I might write more about it later. But right now I am in Munich and my internet-cafe time is almost up, and I have a train to Ljubljana tonight. This time I even have a reservation for a bed in the sleeper car! Exciting.

And just for the record Germany is awesome.

I think I might have a notebook from Neuschwanstein Castle. Always wanted to visit -- though if it's that commercialised, it does put me off a little ...

Being savaged by a kitten, minus the cute? Sounds unpleasant. I've had similar experiences of twelve-year-olds and the like trying to be intimidating, and it's just so weird when you know the age difference, and they don't seem to.

Have a good train trip to "somewhere with an unpronounceable-looking name"!

It's pretty, and the surrounding scenery is spectacular, but it's been turned into the tourist equivalent of the "Bavarian village" at Busch Gardens. Unpleasant.

Ah! An actual sleeper car! Brilliant! You must tell me what that's like- I don't know why, but the sleeper car has exercised a firm grasp on my imagination, much more so than any castle.

Sleeper car is... a tiny compartment with three bunks on each wall and a ladder. I had the top bunk last night and you get about a foot and a half of headroom, but at least your sleeper-car-mates can't watch you make silly faces in your sleep.

Also, the beds have about as much padding as the seats on a Parisian bus, and yet they are somehow comfortable. Or at least more comfortable than the bed from our hotel in Digne.

"Mother, I'm in hell. Some people like to call it Munich." That and "It's ok to live with mice" top out my favorite quotes from my own spring break trip to Munich. (After the first night, it wasn't that bad, really.)

Enjoy the sleeper car!

Suddenly I am glad I only had a layover in Munich and not an overnight trip. ;)

"And just for the record Germany is awesome."
It's funny being German. Whenever someone says this, you feel the urge to disagree. But if you had written "Germany is shit", I would still have tried to defend it.

Neuschwanstein is overrated IMHO, and the aspect of being shoved through rooms with thousands of other tourists always put me off.

And I've never liked the south of Germany. I don't like the dialect and I don't like the attitude. The north, however, is awesome. As in, Hamburg and such.
But I'm glad you're enjoying your trip through Europe, and I hope you had/have fun in Slovenia! ;)

Anyway. This was a rather negative comment. Whoops. As I said, have fun!

I enjoyed Germany a lot because it's... waaaaay less uptight than France. More familiar, somehow, culturally at least.

Am going to Berlin and Hamburg at the end of the trip! Looking forward to it.

Snort. Conformist kiddies. You weren't tempted to hex 'em at all, were you? I hate the ones who hunt in social packs - what grand courage to team up with your mates and harrass someone.

I'd love to explore Germany! My former London flatmate (whom I'm meeting up with again in London this time around - yay) is Bavarian, and keeps asking when I'll visit.

I might've been tempted to try to scare them if I hadn't been so bewildered. It took me a minute to realize my ears weren't deceiving me and they really were saying the German equivalent of "Get lost, witch!" I mean... seriously?! Then I was too busy laughing.
