Oh my fucking god

I just wanted to verify one thing for this fic

and ended up spending three hours on Google books reading the full rules and regulations for the Collèges Royaux circa 1820 and now I have to fucking gut this fic if I want to fix it

This is not even obsessive-compulsive anything it's the fact that this fandom is in a fucking black hole of history and you have to spend three hours on Google books to find out what age boys got sent off to school. I did not want or need to read the full regulations, I just wanted to know if thirteen was a fucking reasonable age and whether there were private religious schools. (Answer: somewhere between nine and twelve, and no, the Restoration's deal was to just stick the religion in the public schools.)

If I run into one more roadblock like this I am just punting and writing silly crack fic.

Remember that rules are meant to be broken if daddy knows someone. If that helps at all.

(I could have answered the religious schools question but, unfortunately, I have a real job now and wasn't around this afternoon. You can totally use me tonight if it'll help at all.)

Nah, the age thing won't affect the fic too much. It's the religious-schools thing that got me, because I wrote under that assumption and am now going to have to revise shit all over the place, but I think a public lycée (or collège royal or whatever) fits the family better anyway. Bonapartist parents = not going to send their son off to get educated by Jesuits, no matter how much of a defiant little shit he is.

Oh, and I am serious. I'm off to bed right now, but if you need help, email me and I'll get to it in the morning. My not terribly disorganised Google Library is here - go into each shelf because some of them have notes with important page numbers. (Yes, there are two shelves for nineteenth century France - I haven't figured out how that happened or taken the time to adjust the contents, but they aren't perfect mirrors.)

Because I know how the research with this fandom can get - I swear at times last weekend, working on your fic, I looked like this icon here *g*.

Calling this fandom a black hole of information is so very right. It exists in trasition of 3 other periods and is lost between them, because of its location in time. Finding information for the eras before and after are a piece of cake D:

Keep up the good research! *fist pump of solidarity*

Ugh tell me about it. XD And it's not for lack of sources! Or even lack of academic scholarship! It's more like... the fashion is ugly and the politics aren't that interesting*, so no one wants to make costume dramas or write historical fiction about it, AND SO there is a complete lack of resources that are useful for mere mortals.

* Okay, the politics are occasionally entertaining, but not really game-changing except 1830 sort of.

And the BNF is so not my BFF right now because they apparently don't have the right-wing papers online. I can't find the Moniteur or the Gazette de France. I mean, at least they have the Journal des Débats (which is rightist for the early part of the period but switched loyalties) and the Constitutionnel, so gift horse, mouth, etc., but how in the hell can I not find the Moniteur?

Admittedly, I've been amassing a pretty damned good physical library, considering the limitations, and despite the additional shelves for other fandoms, should I just post a link to my Google Library? Only a couple of those shelves are entirely for other fandoms, though some of the shelves have Edwardian stuff as well as Romantic era stuff.

Though i'm the girl who spent hours, in 2003, trying to figure out how long it took dispatches from Istanbul to reach London, because of a paper on the lead up to the Crimean War, so I'm probably not the best person to consider when talking research for mere mortals :) (A good chunk of my fun stuff is also in French, therefore not helpful to a large section of fandom.)

The only film that I know that is not a Les Miz film set during that time would be Amistad, actually. I have a historical fashion in America encyclopedia and the 1820's and 1840's have hundreds of pages. The 1830's (early) has.. maybe 5? (I have to say that the men's fashion was pretty excellent, though).

I think the Young Victoria takes place during that timeframe. Aaand that's all I got.

That sounds like what happens to me every time I try writing anything that isn't 100% fantasy.

Oh, and Happy Birthday!
