I fixed it. I got rid of the virus. I spent months puzzling over it and combing the Symantec website for something that fit its description, and all the while it was staring me in the face.
Note to self: in future, any and all questions can be answered by Google. Do not forget this, you stupid ass.
Yes, my months of bewilderment were ended when I went to Google and searched for the phony registry file the worm tried to import every time I booted. And just for everyone's information, it was known as something like the kwin32 bot, aka the 'moo.reg' Kazaa worm. And it's GONE.
Let this be a lesson to all of us: do not underestimate the power of Google. Oh yeah, and don't download suspicious programs off Kazaa.
