Despite my last post, I'd have to say that this annoys me quite a bit (the bolding is mine):

From The Advocate, October 26, 2004, p.17:

Immigration

Transgender marriage ban

While states still have the right to define marriage for themselves, when it comes to immigration the federal government makes its own rules. Not only has the Citizenship and Immigration Service routinely refused to recognize foreign-born partners of American gays and lesbians, the CIS (formerly the Immigration and Naturalization Service) now says it won't recognize transgendered people's unions with either sex.

A CIS-issued memo says the agency will not recognize any marriage in which either party has changed or plans to change his or her sex.
"They really bent over backward to avoid doing anything that smacks of same-sex marriage," said Riki Wilchins, executive director of GenderPAC.

I don't know what to say. Just that I knew from my parents (both immigration lawyers) that Bush's cronies were really mucking up the INS, but had no idea they'd pull shit like this. I thought they'd confined their nastiness to racial profiling and giving low-level bureaucrats the ability to deny anyone a visa or green card based on pure whim--but now apparently they have to drag GLBT issues into it.
