Raise your hand if the thought of studying Old Occitan makes you weak in the knees!
XD So I am finally starting the college search thing, and I'm only three years late! I dipped my toes in the academic waters at Simon's Rock enough to come to the conclusion that I want to study linguistics--what better preparation for a career in food service, after all. There are lots of other things I have a geeky and pseudo-academic interest in, but nothing just makes my brain go click like languages do. And in sifting through utterly useless college-search websites, looking for a place where I can exercise my passion for politically incorrect dead white European languages in peace, my mother hit upon an ingenious solution: don't follow the linguistics programs. Follow the medieval studies programs. How did we discover this? Well, mom googled Cornell and discovered that their linguistics program looks really boring and full of sociolinguistic bullshit, but their medieval studies program offers... *takes a deep breath*
Medieval Latin, Vulgar Latin, Old English, Middle English, Gothic, Old Saxon, Old High German, Middle High German, Old Norse-Icelandic, Old Irish, Middle Welsh, Old Occitan (Provençal), Old French, Medieval Spanish, Medieval Italian, Old Russian, Old Church Slavonic, Classical Arabic, Medieval Hebrew, Classical Chinese, and Classical Japanese.
*______*
Is there a single language on that list that I wouldn't salivate at the thought of studying? NO THERE IS NOT.
Cornell is extra-shiny because they not only encourage interdisciplinary interest, they actually require medieval studies majors to minor in something else. So I can safely pursue a side interest in musical theater, computer science, French history, or classics.
...I'm a nerd, aren't I? Truly and irreconcilably.
(P.S. Oh my fucking God, seven years ago my former Latin teacher taught a course entitled "Read the Christmas story in the original Greek by Christmas." Yes, that was the course name. That man is such a geek and I love him so much and I am kicking myself so hard right now for not taking Latin II with him.)
