'Til Friday, probably.

No, I haven't been updating a lot recently. This is partly due to the fact that my life is mostly too boring to write about, and partly due to the fact that I've been getting my fandom fix from forums more than LJ lately. (I do still read my flist, though.)

I've invented a new definition of "working diligently on getting the new section of the site up," one that involves alternating between playing Minesweeper, refreshing my flist, and trawling Google for things like public execution in the 1830s, the Paris catacombs, what the fuck a canezou is anyway, and other things that don't actually have much to do with the content of the site. Lame? Totally. But Googlebooks has a bunch of 19th-century books on Parisian prisons, which are distracting when the alternative is manually creating gallery pages for all of the 124 France photos that are going on the website.

Actually, I might make up for my lack of activity by spamming the fuck out of LJ on Friday just because I think the content strike is stupid. Removal of the option to sign up for a basic account? Kinda sucky, but understandable--I would've favored a return to invite-only for free accounts, but whatever, they've got to make money, and I've got Adblock and a paid account. The secrecy and corporate FUD surrounding the whole issue, and the popular interest filter brouhaha? Annoying--and I've got to say, pulling a stunt like that and then making a [livejournal.com profile] news post patting themselves on the back for their openness and willingness to listen to their userbase, that takes a special kind logic and it ain't earth logic. Classy, LJ, real classy. The Anton Nosik interview? A little disturbing, but if anything just makes it clear that the content strike isn't gonna accomplish much.

Because honestly, everything LJ's done up to this point--including strikethrough, stopping free accounts, adult content labels, interest filtering, and all the mangled PR--is amateur asshattery. Anyone actually paying attention is going to get annoyed with them, but on principle, not because LJ is actively pissing in their Cheerios. And as long as LJ restricts itself to amateur asshattery, the content strike is an empty threat because people are not going to leave en masse unless there is some serious, dedicated asshattery targeting them. Not posting for a day is not going to prevent any dedicated asshattery that might arise in the future--it's practically declaring that you couldn't otherwise tear yourself away from LJ for a day. As for the dent it will make... I have the feeling that if all of online fandom up and left tomorrow, Jason Shellen would not worry about the lost ad revenue, he would breathe a sigh of relief that he no longer had to explain to his advertisers why their banners were getting plastered all over Torchwood mpreg tentacle porn.
