Perhaps I was unable to realize or admit this when I was still seething at the idiocy of the PotO fandom... but as moving and deep and generally awesome as Les Mis is...

Phantom is prettier.

Period.

And there is much to be said for the pretty.

Not as much as for the moving and deep and generally awesome, but dammit, I have a weakness for the pretteh. In the way that involves pretty boys doing naughty things to each other, but even more in the way that involves frilly dresses and candlelit lairs and string sections that soar like a nightingale on LSD.

Yes, teh_foofy beats teh_gay.

As there is far more to Les Mis than teh_badly_suppressed_gay, this post should not in any way shape or form be taken as a fandom switch. I'm just sayin'. LM wins at plot, which is more important anyway, but has been soundly trounced in aesthetic appeal.

I don't like the sets and costumes in Les Mis much. I especailly don't like Cosette's dress and Eponine's first costume. Eponine, I could see why her clothes are very pretty, but I though Cosette had some fashion sense (in the book it is mentioned once or twice, isn't it?). Phantoms costumes are very beautiful though. My favorite one is Christine's Think of Me costume followed by her night gown.

I find the sets and costumes in LM to be... I dunno, serviceable. They support the setting and the plot, and if you take a step back they have their own gritty sort of appeal... but you just can't beat Phantom and its quasi-gothic frippery.

I like the nightgown too, and the Wishing dress. And the dressing room and lair sets. And mirrors and mannequins and music boxes. Plus, I'm pretty sure I like the music for Phantom more--but it's LM that's always stuck in my head because yay obsession.

... what, you mean snazzy opera clothing is prettier than street gamine clothing? *G*

I agree. But nothing in Phantom is as cool as the barricade. Period.

LM = teh cool.

PotO = PRETTY.

Different appeals, I guess.

(Though LM, rough and dirty as it is, still pleases my aesthetic sensibilities more than the Phantom movie. Ragged grandeur is prettier than tacky, overblown camp.)

....really, I think the pretty is the only thing I like about Phantom anymore. The fandom sucked the life out of all the characters, relationships, and plot. Ugh.
