I discovered something wonderful this evening, which is that if you stick a piece of paper on top of your tablet it will continue to function. And if this piece of paper happens to be fanart that you are tracing into Photoshop, well...
Once I got the lineart in, looking only slightly more deformed than the original, and worked out all those pesky issues with layers and transparency and fun stuff like that, I could actually start coloring it. =D It's... quite an experience. Heh. All my art "talent" is in sketching, I've never tried seriously to paint, so I was rather dubious about paint-bucket "washes" and how stupid they looked before I actually started doing shades and such. And, being a stupid bint and not realizing that I should do it in order from darkest to lightest, I managed to royally fuck up someone's hair, which was a nightmare anyway because curly hair is a bitch to draw. And even more so when you have no idea what you're doing with your shiny new toys. Also, being only familiar with sketching and the principle of "put drawing implement to paper = paper gets darker," I am greatly amused by being able to pencil in highlights. And proud, rightly so I hope, of the way the hair is now turning out due to highlightage.
Yes, I am doing this instead of my now-very-late homework, once again. And no, I am not a visual arts person at all, I just enjoy dabbling. And damn do I like the way this is turning out--not that I'm the next Picasso or anything, just that for once my people don't look horribly awkward and the shading is marginally working and there's nothing about it that looks acutely terrible. That's an improvement for me, mind. I just have to remember "darker to lighter" and keep some tiny sense of where the light is coming from and I'll be able to produce fanart that isn't a complete trainwreck. Hopefully.
...eee, I can't get over how much fun the hair is. XD
