tenlittlebullets: (TARDIS)
If you modded LiveJournal communities back in the day, please consider archiving them to Dreamwidth NOW. So much 2000s internet history lives there, and if LJ falls off the internet (as it very well might, depending on how things go in Russia in the near future), links will break and vast amounts of it will be lost. Wayback Machine only captures public posts; a Dreamwidth import can pull in locked posts and comments, and allow people to view them by joining the comm.

If you don't want to go to the hassle yourself, I will happily do it for you - just DM [personal profile] tenlittlebullets on DW and temporarily add [livejournal.com profile] 10littlebullets on LJ as a community mod. I can do it under this account, a catchall archivist account, or a specific one created just for the comm. If you want the Dreamwidth version to be co-maintained or transferred to your DW account, I can also do that.

If Dreamwidth's importer locks up, as it might if there's an archiving stampede, this Tumblr post (+reblogged mirror just in case) has instructions for exporting comments in XML format. LJ still has a built-in page that lets you do the same for posts. Dreamwidth won't let you import from these XML files, but they're still human-readable and can probably be imported to Wordpress if you want to host an archive later.

(Pre-emptive permission: Feel free to link, copy, repost, and spread this post wherever you want. Also feel free to translate it into any language you want. I would be both gratified and extremely relieved if any Russian speakers want to spread it around to people who were active on ЖЖ back in the day and are in a position to safely back up their old content; the offer to help with importing is still open, even if we have to communicate through Google Translate!)

Uhhhh... just got a pingback notification. Even though I had pingbacks explicitly turned off, and verified this as soon as I saw the latest LJ news post.

Mind you, they're useful (I had no idea [livejournal.com profile] despatches was linking to posts in [livejournal.com profile] lesmiz--would never have thought of Les Mis as an Age of Sail fandom!), but this is some major fail on LJ's part. Not just the opt-out, enbled-by-default thing, but the fact that you can't actually opt out even though it tells you you can.

I raised my eyebrows at LJ's handling of strikethrough07, but assumed it was a horribly abortive attempt to cover their asses and rolled my eyes at the great majority of the fandom outrage that continued after the explanation posts. Striketwo, however, is just plain shitty customer service, and any attempt to go into more detail about the many ways it is wrong on so many levels will go on for hours and hours. Some major wtfs, though, are SA's misrepresentation of the legal issues, the whole pro-ana asplosion, burr86 not having a private and non-corporate-affiliated journal for his mockity mock mock, the lack of reimbursement for permabanned paid users (which is illegal under 6A's precious California law), and--oh yeah--the contradictions, the waffling, LJ staff offering conflicting explanations of the TOS, 6A going back on their word without announcing anything, and the general total lack of transparency and epic fail at providing clear answers. The stupid is mind-boggling.

And really, the only thing it makes me want to do is intersperse your regularly scheduled photo posts with underage teenage frenchboy porn. After all, who here would object to a detailed recounting of Courfeyrac's loss of virginity? :D (Besides Warriors for Innocence, that is, but they don't count.) I'm sure he didn't wait until he was eighteen.

Should banination for underage frenchboy porn occur, my entire journal is backed up to greatestjournal under the username julyinhereyes.
